Into the Clouds: Is It Time to Get Involved?

Keeping with the Times

“While cloud computing adoption was expanding rapidly even before the pandemic, urgent changes to business operations caused adoption to increase at an even greater rate.” (Flexera, 2021). With many businesses’ normal work patterns disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was crucial to adapt and improvise to overcome this issue and keep ‘normal’ business flowing. While many had already turned to cloud-based computer services before the pandemic, others were quick to join when they realised that working from home would become standard practice. While some were fast to adjust to the ever-changing landscape, others were more reluctant, citing fear of the unknown and a worry of the potential risks involved. But are the worries warranted?

A Look at the Statistics

  • The UK is the third biggest investor in cloud computing (£10 billion) second only to China and the USA.
  • 94% of businesses claimed they saw an improvement in security after switching to the cloud.
  • It is reported that 83% of companies store sensitive data in the cloud.
  • Microsoft reported that 94% of small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) gain more security by moving to the cloud and report fewer security incidents.
  • Microsoft also reported that 82% of SMBs gain cost savings as a direct result of cloud adoption.

How Crucial is Adapting?

Cloud computing is quickly transitioning from a ‘nice alternative’ of how businesses operate to becoming the backbone of everything the business does. With more and more businesses adopting a different work pattern in place of the standard ‘9-5’, including hybrid work and working from home, it is vitally important to stay connected in a flexible, safe, and cost-effective manner.

Make the Change Today…

As more and more businesses see the benefits of these services such as increased security, cost savings, and flexibility, the popularity grows stronger daily. So maybe the time is now to look seriously at cloud-based computing. While the pandemic has caused many setbacks, it has also caused some of those previously opposed to cloud adoption to embrace it and inevitably wonder why they have been putting it off for so long.
